AfCFTA starts country specific consultation input



The Africa Continent Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) secretariat has started National Consultation Forums to seek input from countries that ratified the AfCFTA treaty.

Together with the Ethiopian Ministry of Trade and Regional Integration (MoTRI) in collaboration with the Policy Studies Institute (PSI) and with the support from the Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) through its African Trade Policy Center (ATPC), the AfCFTA will work together towards shaping the future of trade and regional integration.

The AfCFTA, adopted in 2018, represents a historic effort to unite 55 African Union member states with a combined GDP of nearly $3 trillion. This Agreement establishes a legal framework for comprehensive economic integration, aimed at creating a unified African market that fosters the free movement of goods and services, and investment facilitation ultimately strengthening Africa's trading capacity on a global scale at the time of digital age.

In 2019, Ethiopia ratified the AfCFTA, demonstrating its commitment to this transformative initiative. As part of its effort in domesticating the Agreement, the country is in the process of developing its National AfCFTA Implementation Strategy. 
This strategy will identify key sectors where Ethiopia can gain a competitive advantage under the AfCFTA and integrate its economy into regional and global value chains. The strategy prioritizes inclusivity, gender sensitivity, and environmental sustainability, and is essential for enhancing Ethiopia's readiness to fully harness the benefits of the AfCFTA.
A high-profile forum is set to take place at Skylight Hotel, focusing on raising awareness about the AfCFTA and its implications, engaging in discussions about the roles of various stakeholders in Ethiopia's AfCFTA journey, and seeking feedback for the National AfCFTA Implementation Strategy.
The participation of government agencies, non-governmental organizations, civil society groups, private sector representatives, and academic institutions will be vital. This collaborative effort is poised to play a pivotal role in advancing Ethiopia's integration into the African market and driving sustainable economic growth across the continent.
Ethiopia is actively taking transformative steps to unlock the immense potential benefits of the AfCFTA, aligning its economic policies with regional integration goals and creating a path for expanded trade opportunities across Africa.

Basajja commits to revamping Kansanga health facilities

29 January 2024 City Mogul, Hassan Basajjabalaba, has pledged to revamp and support health facilities around Kansanga township a suburb in Kampala City. He has committed to support mostly maternal health care. Basajjabalaba, a renowned businessman and  proprietor of Kampala International University (KIU)  said while touring the facilities in Kansanga that the increasing rate of maternal mortality in Uganda has raised questions about what this means for society and beyond. “My main reason for this tour is to check on the situation here. The rate of maternal mortality is alarming. We need to save the mothers of the nation,” he said. Statistics from Uganda's Ministry of Health show that partner-supported government efforts to reduce  maternal mortality are beginning to yield fruits with reduction  from 339 to 189 per 100,000 live births. Uganda receives first batch of crude line pipes

BY PAUL TENTENA Another milestone in the construction of the East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP) has been reached with the first delivery of nine trucks loaded with coated line pipes at Main Camp and Pipe Yard (MCPY) 4 in Kyotera District, Uganda. The coated line pipes will be transported to designated storage sites and laid along the 1,443-kilometer heat-traced crude oil pipeline.  The EACOP will transport Uganda's crude oil from the Hoima Terminal in Uganda to Tanga Port in Tanzania, where it will be exported to international markets. To date, the project has received 800 kilometres of line pipes, which are currently undergoing coating and insulation at the Nzega Coating Yard in Tanzania.
