Finishing What the World Started at the UN Ocean Conference

Image
John F. Kerry NICE – As the sun sets on the third United Nations Ocean Conference in Nice, there is much to celebrate, but also much unfinished business for the world to address at the UN Climate Change Conference (COP30) in Belém, Brazil, later this year. Against a backdrop of global uncertainty and questions about whether multilateral processes can still deliver, the countries represented in Nice were largely united on the need for a more ambitious response to the challenges facing our ocean.  But this was only the first leg of the journey. To protect this life-preserving global commons in time, much more must be done ahead of COP30. Among the outcomes to celebrate, the High Seas Treaty has made remarkable progress. With 19 countries  ratifying  it in Nice, and another dozen committing to do so, we are now on course to make this landmark global agreement operational by the start of 2026, enabling the creation of marine protected areas on the high seas. That will plug an...

How Uganda can secure its forests

Image
BY PAUL TENTENA Forests account for 11.5% of Uganda's land and are vital to the nation's ecosystem. They provide timber, food, fuel, and medicines for many Ugandans. However, this green heart of Africa is facing a serious challenge. In 2023 alone, Uganda lost 37.6 thousand hectares of its natural forests, according to Global Forest Watch. If this trend continues unchecked, it could lead to the disappearance of these essential natural forests in the coming decades, along with a wealth of irreplaceable biodiversity. The impact of deforestation is deeply felt by local communities that rely on forests for their daily needs. For instance, Bangazi Edward, a resident of Buwala village in Jinja District, Eastern Uganda, highlights the growing pressure on the land: “We are having a problem with firewood because we have few trees, and the population is really big.” This situation underscores the urgent need for sustainable solutions. Bold government policy Fortunately, there is hope on t...

The goal of eliminating malaria by 2030 is in jeopardy

Image
Africa could see  554,000 additional malaria deaths  due to climate change, unless urgent action is taken. Innovation must match the scale of the malaria crisis Despite widespread use of insecticide-treated nets (ITNs) and artemisinin-based combination therapies (ACTs), many regions continue to suffer high malaria burdens due to insecticide resistance and environmental factors that reduce the effectiveness of these tools. In Burkina Faso, for example, malaria remains the leading cause of death among young children, despite major investments in control programs. That’s why scientists and public health experts are urgently turning to next-generation technologies to complement traditional approaches. One promising innovation is gene drive technology. Not-for-profit research consortium, Target Malaria, is developing gene drive technology, a type of genetic modification, to reduce the population of malaria-transmitting mosquitoes and reduce the transmission of the disease....
