Emphasis on money is killing young professionals – MAK Don
BY PAUL TENTENA
Makerere
University Senior Lecturer Professor Moses Musinguzi, the Dean of Students College
of Engineering, Design, Art and Technology (CEDAT) has urged young graduates to
always focus on career, skills enhancement and development rather than money.
He said emphasis
on money is killing young professionals and hence injuring their career
development.
“Your focus is
always on how much you will be paid or earning in the world of work yet you don’t
have the skills which can help you to earn what you want. Putting too much
emphasis on money is killing your progress,” said Musinguzi at Makerere
University during the Second Edition of the Huawei Campus Recruitment 2025
seminar that was conducted under the theme, ‘The sky is the limit.’
Musinguzi advised students to consider internships, collaborative
research and career development while focusing on professionalism and having a
proper, and positive attitude towards work.
“Short term gains cannot help your career advancement,” he said.
The 2025 Campus Recruitment
Program aims to empower final-year students and recent graduates to unlock their
career potential and contribute to Uganda’s digital future.
It is open to undergraduate
and postgraduate students from universities across Uganda. The program offers opportunities to engage with
industry leaders, network with Huawei representatives, and explore career paths
in disciplines such as Electrical Engineering, Telecommunications, Cyber
Security, Computer Science, Software Engineering, Finance, Procurement &
Logistics, Industrial Engineering, Human Resources, Administration, and Public
Management.
Huawei seeks to identify and nurture exceptional talent through comprehensive training, mentorship, and
hands-on project experience to help young professionals thrive in the
fast-evolving tech sector.
Participants also learnt about Huawei’s commitment to sustainability, gender equity, and
community empowerment through initiatives like the Huawei ICT Competition,
Seeds for the Future, and the Huawei DigiTruck project.
Julius Mugume, the Deputy Director Delivery and
Service at Huawei Uganda told participants that the company commands 70% share
of the market with a third of the population in Uganda served by Huawei.
He said they majorly focus on five key areas of ICT
infrastructure, devices, Huawei cloud, digital power and intelligent automotive
solution.
Barbara Nuwagira the Huawei Senior Ambassador for
Uganda said they expect to have students interested in ICT careers get
motivated and continue in their profession rather than running away to other fields
they didn’t study due to fear of being unemployed for a very long time.
The key 2025 Campus Recruitment Program features mentor coaching, learning in practice, integrated training, and self-learning platform.
