Huawei innovation summit for SMEs ends



Huawei Cloud Enterprise Innovation and SME Summit Uganda 2024 kicked off in Kampala where over 100 industry startups, fintech’s, venture capitals, government organizations and key strategic partners in Uganda gathered for a colorful event held at the Kampala Sheraton Hotel.

They converged to share ideas on startup innovation, ecosystem collaboration and digital transformation while using Cloud solutions. Representatives from some startups like KaCyber, ioTec and Vouch digital also shared their success stories about Huawei Cloud services and Huawei’s contribution thus far.

The Chief Guest Rt. Hon. Rukia Nakadaama the 3rd Deputy Prime Minister of the Republic of Uganda reassured the guests that the Government of Uganda through Ministry of ICT and National Guidance is committed to the agenda of digitalization. 

“This initiative emphasizes the role of digital transformation in creation of jobs, stimulating innovation and boosting economic growth particularly for SMEs and these digital technologies are essential for SMEs to stay competitive and overcome traditional business barriers allowing them to improve processes and reach new markets”.

Nakadaama appreciated the Huawei management for the commitment to digitalization and thanked Huawei for their ongoing support to enterprises in Uganda encouraging businesses to adopt digital solutions that is evidenced in the testimonials from Kacyber in the transport and ioTEC in the financial sector.

"More SMEs should tap into the cloud support offered by Huawei under the Startup Program in Uganda that has been launched.

"Spread to the word beyond the walls of the room and do massive sensitization and allow people in rural areas to get a better understanding of the Huawei Cloud services," said Nakadaama.

Gume Frederick Ngoobi, Minister of State for Trade in charge of Cooperatives said the government is doing its best to go fully digital by 2040. 

"Uganda is going global and as such a business owner needs to be on the lookout for their production costs, efficiency in production and marketing globally to foster sales and Huawei provides solutions to operate optimally with the data security. 

"Young people should do business remotely and reduce unemployment rates. Huawei Technologies Uganda has done wonders towards empowering SMEs in Uganda to grow using technologies like cloud," said Ngoobi.

Sunrise Xie, the Managing Director of Huawei Technologies Uganda noted that for over 20 years, Huawei has thrived in Uganda, witnessing and contributing towards the country’s digital transformation. 

“The Ugandan start-up ecosystem is expanding significantly, with a constant increase in new start-ups across the country. The Ugandan start-ups are regarded as the hope for national development. They are key drivers of innovation and economic growth.” said  Sunrise.

Sunrise Xie also announced the launch of the Huawei Cloud Start-up Program for Uganda as a new milestone of Huawei Cloud in Uganda and emphasized the commitment to continue empowering enterprises to innovate and grow. He concluded by thanking the government representatives present for their generous support towards the digitalization of the different enterprises and SMEs in Uganda.

Uganda receives first batch of crude line pipes

BY PAUL TENTENA Another milestone in the construction of the East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP) has been reached with the first delivery of nine trucks loaded with coated line pipes at Main Camp and Pipe Yard (MCPY) 4 in Kyotera District, Uganda. The coated line pipes will be transported to designated storage sites and laid along the 1,443-kilometer heat-traced crude oil pipeline.  The EACOP will transport Uganda's crude oil from the Hoima Terminal in Uganda to Tanga Port in Tanzania, where it will be exported to international markets. To date, the project has received 800 kilometres of line pipes, which are currently undergoing coating and insulation at the Nzega Coating Yard in Tanzania. United Nations disagrees with Uganda military law

UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker  T ürk has expressed concern at the passing in Uganda’s Parliament of proposed legislation to allow for civilians to be tried in military courts.   The Uganda People’s Defence Forces Amendment Bill 2025, which was passed on 20 May and now awaits presidential signature to become law, among others broadens the jurisdiction of military courts, authorising them to try a wide range of offences against civilians.   “I am concerned that rather than encouraging efforts to implement the Supreme Court’s crystal-clear decision of January this year, Uganda’s legislators have voted to reinstate and broaden military court’s jurisdiction to try civilians, which would contravene international human rights law obligations,” said Türk.   “I respectfully urge President Museveni to reject the retrogressive bill and take the necessary steps to comply fully and promptly with the Supreme Court’s decision.”   The trial of civilians by milita...
